Welcome to Whitley Bay Explorers
At Whitley Bay Explorers, every night is an adventure. We’re a high-energy Explorer Scout Unit for young people aged 14–18 who love trying new things, developing real-life skills, and getting outdoors.
Whether it’s climbing, first aid training, night navigation, or pizza making, every session is packed with action and fun.
What is Explorers?
Explorers are a go-getting group of young people aged 14–18. Together, we make up the fifth section of the Scouts family in the UK. We began in 2002, building on the foundations of Venture Scouts for 15–21-year-olds (which ran from 1967–2002). Today we have nearly 50,000 Explorers across 3,000 Explorer Scout Units.
What We Do
We give young people a place to belong, equipping them with the skills they need to navigate their lives and build fulfilling futures. We want to help them build and maintain good mental health and wellbeing and collaborate in and initiate decision making which has a positive impact on their own lives and their local, national and international communities.
Explorers meet weekly, on Mondays, taking part in a programme of activities to try new things, make friends, and in their own way, help change the world. They do everything from outdoor adventure to international travel, camps (including jamborees) to community impact, volunteering and environmental projects.

Adventure
Hill walking, expeditions, target shooting, and challenges that get you outdoors.

Skills For Life
First aid, navigation, teamwork, and leadership – real skills for real life.

Friends & Community
Make friends, be part of a supportive group, and have fun every week.

The Groups
Unlike younger sections, Whitley Bay Explorers is organised at a District level, meaning we’re the only Explorer group in Whitley Bay. We are one large unit split into three groups. Each group follows the same exciting program, tailored specifically for their age. While groups usually meet separately, we regularly come together for big, unit-wide events and adventures.
Group A
If you join us at 14, you’ll usually start here. Group A is made up of Explorers in Year 9 and 10 who take part in the full weekly programme together.
Group B
The Year 11 Explorers in Group B follow the same weekly programme, building on the same activities with slightly more responsibility as they gain experience.
Group C
Our sixth formers & college students make up Group C. They continue the same programme, growing their independence, and stepping up the challenge.
