Explorer Scouts socialising by a campfire

Information & FAQs

Essential information for parents. Find details on fees, safety, and subs, plus answers to our most frequently asked questions.

Fees & Subs

It costs £10 per month to be an Explorer, paid via a direct debit using Online Scout Manager (OSM).

We aim to keep Scouting affordable. Your termly subs are invested directly back into the adventure, covering:

  • National Fees: Approx. half of the sub is paid to the Scout Association HQ as a membership fee
  • Weekly Materials: From craft supplies to ingredients for cooking nights.
  • Badges & Awards: Every badge earned, from DofE to staged activity badges, is provided at no extra cost.
  • Activity Equipment: Maintaining our tents, stoves, other gear, and hall facilities

We use a secure system called Online Scout Manager (OSM). Once your child joins, you will receive an invite to set up a Direct Debit. This makes it easy to track payments for subs and one-off trips.

Financial Support: We believe adventure should be accessible to all. If you have concerns about the cost of subs or trips, please speak to a leader in total confidence – we are here to help.

Communication

Online Scout Manager (OSM) is the most reliable way to stay informed. As a parent, you can use the Parent Portal to:

  • Update emergency contact details and medical information.
  • Sign up for upcoming camps and expeditions.
  • Check the termly program.

We also send regular email updates via OSM. These include info for weekend events, kit lists, and notifications about any changes to what’s going on.

Top Tip: Addmyscout@onlinescoutmanager.co.uk to your safe senders list so our weekly updates don’t hit your spam folder!

FAQs

Do they need to have been a Scout before?

No! We welcome any young person aged 14–18. Whether you’re moving up from a local Scout Troop or have never seen a necker in your life, you’re welcome here.

Can they try it out first?

Absolutely. We offer a trial period so they can get a feel for the patrols and activities before you commit to buying a uniform or paying subs.

What kit do they need for a normal night?

Usually just their Explorer uniform (once invested) and comfortable clothes. If we’re doing something messy or heading outdoors, we’ll let you know via OSM in advance.

How do the different groups work?

While we are one District unit, our three groups meet on different nights to keep group sizes manageable – they’re organised by age. We all come together for the big stuff!

Can they do DofE through Explorers?

Yes! We are a DofE delivery centre. Explorers can register for Bronze, Silver, or Gold and use their Scouting activities to tick off their volunteering and physical sections. See more about DofE

What if we can’t make every Monday?

We know teenagers are busy with exams and other hobbies. While regular attendance helps them get the most out of the program, we are flexible.

Safety & Safeguarding

Your child’s safety is our absolute priority. We follow the strict “Yellow Card” code of practice set by The Scout Association to ensure a safe, inclusive environment.

  • Vetted Volunteers: Every adult leader undergoes an Enhanced DBS check and mandatory safeguarding training.
  • Trained for Action: Our team is fully trained in First Aid and conducts rigorous risk assessments for every activity.
  • Inclusive Scouting: We welcome everyone. If your child has specific medical or educational needs (SEND), we’ll work with you to provide the right support.
